Joining the trade blog image

Are you considering making the jump into joinery? It’s a great industry to get involved in so whether you’ve just left school, or fancy a change of scenery – joinery could be the trade for you. You could be the future of our industry!

Skills you’ll need

Maths will be a great advantage to you as precise measurements are an essential part of the job. Along with that, detail will definitely be your thing! You’ll need to be able to follow technical drawings and directions closely and it will certainly help to be a perfectionist – nobody wants a wonky window!

Take a carpentry course at college

If you’re going to be doing work on a building site, you’ll need certain accreditations to legally work there. Sometimes studying carpentry at college can ensure you have all of the certification you’ll need – to see if college is the right option for you, see city and guilds.

Learn from the best with an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships can take between 1 and 4 years to complete generally and it’s a way to learn your trade, whilst getting paid. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to learn from experienced joiners which can be invaluable. Apply for an apprenticeship, or find out more information on the BWF website.

Experience is the name of the game

Above all else, getting experience under your belt is one of the best ways to increase your joinery skill set. Whether you’re starting your own company or looking for employment, the more you have to discuss and show a potential customer or employer, the more likely you are to get the job.

This isn’t an office job

The job will often require being outside, even in the middle of winter! You’ll be travelling around sites and there will sometimes be a requirement to work at weekends if that’s what the job entails. Perfect if you don’t want to be stuck behind a desk all day!
